I would have to say for films, Ingmar Bergman’s Through A Glass Darkly and Tarkovsky’s Solaris are two of my all-time favorites. One of my favorite subjects to both watch and explore in my own work revolve around memory and its fidelity, and both those films operate heavily in the subconscious realm. And as you mentioned, Alain Resnais’ Marienbad complements these two pieces nicely.
A lot of my interest lies in experimental work, particularly Kenneth Anger’s. I have an enormous love for optical printing and filmmakers like Will Hindle and Pat O’Neill. Their techniques paired with the motifs of the narratives mentioned hold a lot of inspiration for my own work.
As far as anime goes, I think all of Satoshi Kon’s work is outstanding and surpasses the assumed limitations of his medium. Millennium Actress is an impeccable film, not just for anime but for film as a whole. Kon treated his work as film, and expounded upon tropes and filmic language that forced his audience to take his features seriously and not reduce them to “anime.” I also am a huge Makoto Shinkai (Five Centimeters Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star) and Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars) fan. In terms of series, I succumb to magical shoujo (longtime Sailor Moon fan) and mecha (Gundam Wing), and slice-of-life dramas like Nana and Peach Girl.
Hope that was concise enough, it’s always hard to tackle questions like that!
