Perfect Blue (Satoshi Kon, 1998)
14:41 Day 12- Favorite Animated Film
Sennen Jōyu (Millennium Actress) (Kon, 2001)
If you know me, or have ever even looked at this tumblr, you know I love anime film. I would have to pick Kon Satoshi’s 2001 release as my favorite because it’s a genuinely beautiful film, both in storytelling and animation.
Two filmmakers interview Chiyoko, a retired actress, about her great career. She tells them about how throughout her life, she was continually searching for one man that gave her a key when she was a little girl.
Some find the film confusing because it jumps between her film world, her history, and present day seamlessly, often blurring the lines between all three. I think it’s a great example of how animation can add to a film, to create something that might not come across as well in live action. Her films span different eras of Japanese history, which I find extremely interesting. Also, Hirasawa Susumu, who often partners with Kon, scores it beautifully with his usual electronic/traditional Japanese music.
